What to Expect from Home Staging Jobs

The role of a home stager is to prepare a house both inside and out for presentation to potential home buyers. With the right qualifications, you could find home staging jobs with companies, design firms and even real estate agents. Or, you could even strike out on your own and be your own boss. It is possible to work as a home staging consultant or even start your own staging company. Before you do, it is imperative to understand what is involved in this particular career field.

Home stagers are hired to make a home more sellable. This starts by evaluating the exterior of the property. The lawn should be well manicured in front and back, and the landscaping should be pleasing to the eye. Adequate outdoor lighting should be installed and if there is a large porch, deck or patio it can be showcased by arranging outdoor furniture and garden items in an attractive way. Next the inside of the home gets the full staging treatment. One distinction that is important for you to understand is that home staging is not like interior decorating.

In the career field of interior decorating, you are working with a client to make their decor dreams a reality with the use of their preferred style and color scheme. It can be a very creative job to have. However when staging a home, there are some major differences. Rather than working with color, your job is to make sure the home is outfitted in soft neutral tones. A touch of color in the form of a tasteful wall hanging or floral arrangement can help add visual interest. Also, the staged home must be clean as it would be if new. And, the owner should remove or hide all personal effects so the house looks like an unlived in show home. This gives potential homebuyers the ability to project how their own items will look inside the house.

Home staging jobs can pay off if you are in the right place. Big cities and areas where the demographic is considered upper middle to upper class are great places to find staging employment. You might want to prepare by taking a staging course online or at a design school. If you are in a smaller town, you can still engage your passion for home staging by working with realtors or becoming one and advising your clients how to prepare their homes for sale.
