Home Staging and Redesign as a Career
If you are passionate about design and real estate, a career in home staging and redesign might be perfect for you. In this field, you will be preparing homes for buyers to look at and/or advising your clients how to prepare their homes. One thing you should know is that home staging is very different from interior decorating. With interior decorating you help your client achieve their vision with color and style. In the world of staging you want to make a home look as impersonal as possible as this is a known way of encouraging buyers.
After all, not many people find a home that looks like it is still being lived in appealing to purchase. The buyer sees your personal effects, your decor choices and your furniture and may not like what they see, thus clouding their impression of the home. By redesigning, it is possible to turn a well-lived in home that looks like a show house. This involves tweaking aspects of both the exterior and interior as needed. This is easier if you have already relocated to a new home, but still possible if you are living in the home you are trying to sell.
If you are looking into home staging as a job opportunity, the first thing you need is some sort of education on the subject. Clients will be looking for credentials when hiring home stagers. As you gain more experience it is crucial to have a portfolio with before and after photos, testimonials from previous clients and perhaps even a few references. This can be hard to do at first, but once you get your foot in the door your career can grow if you are a skilled stager and are in the right place at the right time.
For example, in some cities home staging and redesign is not a realistic career choice because there is little demand for the service. In other areas home stagers are in high demand, so do some research in your area before deciding to enter this line of work. If there is little demand for home stagers in your locality, consider getting a Realtor license and studying the art of staging on the side so you can advise your clients of the best way to prepare their home for sale. This can not only be lucrative for them, but for the selling agent as well.
